I decided to register this domain and throw up a WordPress blog for MSH. This was one of the surprises that I had mentioned in this post. We’re running a fresh install of the Ella release, and believe me it rocks. There are many benefits to running WordPress over Blogger, including:
- the medschoolhell.com domain
- the ability to create static pages, such as the writers wanted page
- pingback and trackback capabilities
- the ability to use plugins
- easily allow other writers to write posts for the blog (not really a benefit, as it can be done through Blogger)
- a somewhat unique look versus the same old Blogger templates
I’ll be honest, one of the reasons why I didn’t update the old MSH was that the standard Blogger platform is pretty limited. I haven’t done so yet, but I plan to set up a redirect from the old blogger to this site. Unfortunately, I’ll lose all page rank that I had at the Blogger domain, but it was only a page rank 3 anyway. It doesn’t take much to get your site to a PR of three.
If you take a look at this site, you’ll see that I have a dedicated page up looking for writers. I’d like to have 1 or 2 volunteer writers that would like to share their experiences with the readers. I’ve been out of medical school for a year now, so it’s time to pass things on so that you guys will still have the same type of content to read.
This isn’t to say that I’m going to stop writing altogether. I’ll still be contributing a lot, and it really depends on what the interest is in writing for this blog. If any of you guys want to write for a blog that already has a reader base built up and daily traffic, here’s your chance. If not, I’ll continue to write about stuff on my own. I still have plans to cover some really useful information for those that are searching for alternative career paths outside of medicine. We’ll start with the specialty-selection series, which should kick off some time this weekend. How does that pertain to working outside of medicine? Well, it doesn’t – but you might be surprised at some of the specialties where you could technically be happy.
Some things that you’ll notice is that all of the comments are timestamped for February 12. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a good and straightforward method to import from the “New Blogger” to WordPress 2.x. Thus, I had to manually import all posts and comments. Yeah, it was a bitch and all comments are stamped for Feb. 12 (the posts are postdated). But, everything that’s at the old domain is here now, so I hope the comments continue to come in.
You’ll also notice that when I comment myself, the name will be ‘Hoover’ and not ‘stox.’ ‘Stox’ was my Blogger username, but many know me from my posts at SDN under the name of ‘Hoover.’ Just thought I’d get that out of the way.
