How to Keep 25% of Homeless People From Asking You For Money

If you’re like me, you absolutely hate it when homeless people bother you for money. Nine times out ten, they don’t want money for food. Instead, they’re trying to feed their drug or alcohol habit while successfully being detriments to society.

I’ve found a great way to stop 1 in 4 homeless people from bothering you. It’s a simple t-shirt:

Plenty of Change

It only stops 1 in 4 homeless people from asking you for money because that’s the estimated number that can actually read. It’s still worth the price of admission.

This makes my tshirt, Call Blows, look like crap. I bow down to the skills of the TShirtHell.com designers.

Yeah, that’s what came to mind…the antithesis of the “Humanism In Medicine” award!

Seriously, perhaps by starting this essentially anonymous blog to show people the brutal realities of medical education you’re the TRUE humanist?

Your attitude towards people affected by homelessness is completely inappropriate. Your statement that 9 times out of 10, people want the money for drugs or alcohol is completely false, since fewer than 25% of the homeless population has a drug or alcohol problem. People like you are a detriment to society.

As a homeless, educated woman,I find your statements regarding the homeless blatenly ignorant. Most homeless people can and do read. You will find us @ the library, reading the newspaper or on the computers. By my estimates, perhaps half the people on the street here in Los Angeles are afflicted with substance abuse problems. Clearly, serious mental illnesses such as scizophenia and depression play pivotal roles in the lives of those of us on the street.
It seems to me Hoover, that you have no interest in learning the truth, but justly feel vindicated sphewing hatred toward other human beings because of their socio-economic class. I have met many like you while panhandling myself. People, not content with
just saying no, who chose to take their rage out on us—because they have had a bad day, or because they are just seething with anger–a hatred internalized and purged on people who’s only crime was to ask for help. I wonder what happens to people who have no humanity left to them. I know that they are sociopaths. But what tricks do they use in public to pass for homo sapien sapiens? Is your human form enough to make people know that you, Hoover are human? Or do people see beyond the facade into a heart of darkness?

      Hello Susan,

I have been wanting to contact you for a long time. My dad (your brother) requested a search for you and I tried to write you a letter to an address you appeared to be staying – but my letter had been sent back.
My sister has been homeless off and on. She has struggled to keep a job and her home due to many of life’s obstacles.
My mom has a portrait of her in her yearbook that you had drawn. She tells me you were close friends in high school. My sister is an amazing artist and she has written novels that were out of this world. She is very creative as you seem to be.
From this blog, I see that you can write very well – obviously, you are educated. I am currently attending college.
I hope that you are able to read this…I know this has been dated three years ago. I would love to be intouch, for family is extremely important to me.
And to all the people who have closed minds, homeless people have a heart and have feelings too.

This is my first post on this site, which is FABULOUS by the way. I know I’m a bit late to post here, but I just had to if only for the benefit of personal relief and venting I just had to say I love the shirt. And I bet you aren’t homeless as you claim to be,Susan. If you are you seem educated enough that you could get your ass off the library computer and to a nearby McDonalds to apply. Or, better yet, to a recruiting station where you can enroll in the military and quit being a lazy know it all bum.
The only deserving begger I’ve ever met and given a dollar to was because of his creativity. Instead of the every day “I’m hungry. Please spare a dollar.” sign his read, “I know I’m ugly, but I’m hungry too.”

      Duh. Recession, housing crunch.

What if your dad lost his job. Your house isn’t worth what he bought it for. The market price fell.

How is he going to refinance?

      No job?

Yes, it can happen to you too.

By the way, how do you know that Susan isn’t homeless because she was beaten by her spouse.

How do you know she doesn’t have a disability preventing work? I do, but I am going to college so that I can work again. Then I can get a sit down job.

By the way. My last 20 years was spent in a factory. I had to move because of abuse. I hurt myself after I moved. Had to have surgery. Don’t have a whole lot of meniscus left. Maybe you know what that is. Was candidate for donor, but I don’t want some dead persons parts in my body. They have too high a risk of infection and death. So, I cannot stand, I cannot squat, I cannot lift more than 20lbs. How would you propose someone like I, should go back to work without furthering my education?

You shouldn’t be so quick to think Susan a lier. Have you read the paper, watched the news? Recession. Duh.

      Insensitive Cow.

Are you a Christian? If you are than you are a hipocrite. I hope you end up on the streets some day. so you can feel what i feel. I am a homeless myself and I am not a drug addict. I use money for my food and clothes. Change your ways.

Do you seriously feel the need to send such a demeaning and fucked up message to people, especially the HOMELESS? For fucking sake, they’re HOMELESS! What more degradation do they need than for a worthless fuck like you to walk around with a shirt like that? Thank goodness you dropped out of pursuing a medical career; you actually saved the lives of potential patients since they are in better hands then the likes of yours, and you saved yourself tons of money in potential malpractice lawsuits. If I see anyone on the street with a shirt like that, I’m spitting a mouthful of tobacco juice on them. Immature fucks

Thats just outrageous. Neither one of us may not know what its like to live on the streets. But how can you prove to me or any one else for that fact that they use their money for drugs and stuff. The pathetic. Thats probably just an assumption of where yours go. Cover up. Get a life, a worry about your own. Ignore them if your gonna be like this.

Wow, are you that stupid? What are you all doing in med school. You all are going to make the worst doctors ever.

Med school isn’t about the money. It is about helping people. Money is only the monetary gain.

I am homeless and I am going to college so that I won’t be that way any more. By the way, have you all read the paper or heard the news.

Homeless people are regular joes now. They are people that are displaced factory workers, like me. I worked factory for 20 years.

THERE IS A HOUSING CRISIS AND A RECESSION GOING ON OUT THERE.

      DUH

Hope you all grow up a bit and grow some compassion, otherwise you don’t belong in the Medical profession.

Do you know nothing about the internet.

Someone that is homeless, might be looking on the internet for, duh, help for the homeless. Programs for the homeless. Shelters for the homeless.

Anyone has access to a computer if they have access to a library.

So, Duh, they might be in the library, looking up services to help them. They type in homeless people. I did to do some research on my speech about homelessness.

      Guess what popped up first?

      Duh.

So, did you cheat on your entrance exams or what?

    Dear Selfish,

    Yes, I have
    Jesus

    You miserable excuse
    for a selfish human being.

Hope He shows you what it is like.

    Thanks for Caring

How would you like to wake up one morning, someone beating the heck out of you and your child. He is drunk and in a rage. You keep him from hitting your son, and you get up and leave. You have no family, no support system. You have no job, as your husband never thought your education was important, just his.

You leave the state to get away from him. You get a job and then you hurt yourself. You have to have surgery and can’t work for a year. You have just had surgery but you no longer can do manual labor like the past 20 years. You only have a high school degree. Ever tried to get a sit down job without a college degree?

My son and I are homeless. I am going to a great college. I am going to get a degree and make more money than you might be making right now. Working with teen girls that are homeless, and or in the foster system.

I spend every waking minute at school working on my studies. My first speech is due on friday. My topic is homelessness. I was doing research on statistics of, when I ran accross this.

The people that are begging you for money have nothing. They have no coffee pot to get fresh coffee from in the morning. They have no stove and refrigerator. They may get food stamps, but it is not enough to eat heat and eat, small meals you have to survive. When you purchase heat and eat meals the food stamps last about 2 weeks.

The people you are refering to are treated terribly in the shelters. In mine they lock you down for the night from 11:00pm to 6:00am. This is for your own protection so that no one will sneak in and rape you or steel from you. The rooms do not come with rest rooms. There is no buzzer to call and have someone let you out to go if you happen to have an emergency in the middle of the night. Even if you are sick, there is no one to call to to get out. You are stuck. Even prisoners get toilets in their rooms. Most of these homeless mothers and children did absolutely nothing wrong. Yet they do not even get the human decency to be able to take a shit.

They have to eat stuff from the shelter that is totally gross. It is gross because most of the food comes from stuff that is going bad, or broken cans at your grocery store. Alot of grocery stores will give these to shelters so that they can get a tax write off instead of a trash bill. We get good stuff, but that is during the holidays, which seams to be the only time that people think we are supposed to eat.

And hey, if your middle class, and you are working somewhere like a factory or something, well, hope it doesn’t go to mexico. If it does, you will be right here on the street and in the shelter joining us.

I pray that the good Lord gives you such trials for your hard heart that you come to understand what someone else besides your selfish self feels.

Only then will thess words I just wrote resonate with you.

May God Bless you, so you can rise above your poor miserable existence that is you.

From someone who hates obnoxious, selfish, probably teenaged, ass wholes.

By the way if you haven’t heard of God,

Then have you heard of Karma “WHAT COMES AROUND GOES AROUND.”

General assumptions of twenty year old, snot nosed, mommy and daddy gives me all, brats.

Like the title? I do. Maybe I’ll make a t-shirt.

Med school brats lack the ability to care for anyone but selves.
Med school brats do not understand the concept of money, as they have none of their own. (only rich mommies)

Med school brats have never had a lesson on caring in their entire lives, or they would not be so self centered.

Med school brats think they know it all and know nothing.
All med school brats are on the drugs they are learning about.

All med school brats are stupid.

Doesn’t seem like med school brats have any thought for anyone else.

General assumptions about someone is not nice.

Do your research there are 170,000 homeless people in america, EVERY NIGHT.
More than 50% are women and children. CHILDREN.

They aren’t lazy, they are a victim of circumstances, most often beyond their control. If you don’t like them holding up signs, don’t look. If it offends you, do something about helping them get off the streets, then you wouldn’t have to look.

By the way, I am not just a student at any college. I am at Cedarville University. One of the top ten in the nation for psyc. So, do not judge a homeless person by their title. Oh, I am also taking ninteen credit hours, work 10 hours a week at the cafeteria, doing work study. They tailored a job just for me, so that I could sit down most of the time. It is also only 2 hrs a shift. So that I don’t have to stand long or walk far.

Besides work study and 19 credit hours, I go to church every time the door is open, and I am going to be doing missions with kids in the foster care system.

So forgive me, it you don’t think I am telling the truth.

    I just don’t care.

My wonderful father in heaven knows that I am telling the truth, and in the end, what HE thinks is all that matters.

Wow, all I can say is wow, I found this site looking for pictures for a school project. And it is just pathetic that you guys are arguing over this shirt. I mean, it was stupid for someone to make such an insensitive shirt, one that can hurt so many people, especially all the children and older people that can not help that they are in the situation that they are in. But on the other hand, you people that are getting so mad, and angry, and cussing, you are no better. You are being just as childish because you cannot let it go that these people have their own opinions.
