Check out Life As a Medical Student’s Ode to the White Coat as he burns it to ashes in a ritualistic frenzy!
Medical Economics has a great writeup on the economics of residency. Part one covers some residency basics for you noobs, while part two takes a closer look at pay scales.
Topher has a great writeup dealing with the belief that physicians should be satisfied with less and less pay because they are “dedicated to helping people.” I share his point of view of why this shouldn’t be the case.
The Angry Pharmacist shares some of his hate mail. Haha, classic.
Your link posts are unique, you know that? Which is what keeps me coming back.
Topher’s write-up did strike a chord in me. Why is it that the pay decrease for medics seems to be prevalent throughout the West? Reeks of the public (as represented by the Government) “getting their revenge” on the “evil doctors” who have lorded superiority over them for so long.
I loved the first link. I have a truly great doctor who occasionally wears that first year coat and I had no idea what it was– it’s a bit tight on him, looks bad, but he wears it on occasion anyway. Since I needed to call her anyway, I called up his nurse after reading that article and asked her about it and she started laughing. He makes enough money to have Yves St. Laurent make his coats for him by hand, but she said that he wears that coat from time to time because it reminds him that he is still a student, still learning and still humble and she said that he will not part with it because so many of his staff and patients have affectionately told him to get rid of it. The guy’s mantra to me is, “Beware of anyone who has more answers than questions,” he tells me, “they will run out of solutions.” I still wish he’d ditch the coat. I’m taking a copy of the story to him.
the first link was nice… thanks for that..
Its nice to see that we medics have good flair in writing. I just thought we are good at write ups only in exams…

Thanks guys =D
It baffles me as well that some people think it’s ok to work more for less. I don’t guess it will end until docs are making $40k per year maximum.
Medic – I think one of the main contributors to decreased compensation is drops in insurance reimbursements.

Great story Kellie. My white coat looks like hell. Thank God I’ll never have to wear it again. =D
It is interesting that your doc still wears his white coat. I’ve never heard of this before.
