Medicine is a small world and word gets around. It's unfortunate that this chief was obviously a jerk to you (by your account). However, honestly, other people have it worse. I had it worse when I was a medical student. However, my experience cemented my determination to be a nice, approachable teacher as a resident. I protect my students now. Being on a surgery rotation can be intimidating because general surgery is challenging. So, having residents who truly care about your education and welfare makes a big difference and can change the course of someone students. I challenge you to rise above the situation...I am assuming you are a resident/staff now? Be good, be brilliant, be congenial. Don't let history repeat itself. --Tired sugical resident.
