First time on this blog. I'm a first year pre-med--yes, a naive little freshman ;) --and I've always been a bit skeptical about hospital volunteering. At least in high school, volunteering opportunities were more work experiences than hardcore medical exposure.

Don't think that hospital volunteering is completely pointless, though. I had a friend who volunteered at a local hospital and applied for (and received) a scholarship meant for those volunteers (though I guess it helped that she was going into biomedical research and had a stellar school record...).

I have yet to learn about college volunteer experiences, but from this post I presume that they will be just like the ones in high school (and I doubt scholarship opportunities come with them)...in that case, I have a lot to look forward to. :/

Okay, So I am currently a college student now. I have just started the fall semester as a junior. Honestly, I wanna say that most people think of the pay before anything else. I know I was. I have a real good gpa and haven't taken the MCAT yet, but I'm pretty glad I didn't. I didn't know that there were people out their spilling their guts out in med school. This just sounds like super torture! I probably wouldn't have a chance to get into med school because I haven't volunteered a single second. I was planning on volunteering hardcore from here on out, but I guess I won't be doing that after all. I am just gonna take the option of going into the field of microbiology and most likely strive to become a professor. Seems less stressful, laid back, and is a respectable position. Tsk tsk, where is the self respect? Well I'm on my way to becoming a Dr nonetheless. To all those who truly have the potential to become a medical professional, good luck to yall. I'll hope yall are the ones that treat me when I'm sick.

Haha, Amber Lee! My dear!

The air in which you credit your darling little 16 year old 'prodigy' makes me think you know her a little to well......
Please don't tell me this is some kind of egotistical ploy to go on bragging about your daughter or yourself (I'm assuming that's the case) .... If so, you're very obvious and stupid.

I find it funny that a 16 year old child would feel so motivated, has she even had her fuckin' period yet?

"You have to prove that you will actually do all sorts of painful things for nothing."

WTF?

Why the hell would anyone want to get into a job where that is a prerequisite? Hell, bend over and invite them to fuck you in the ass with razorblades why don't you?

Kids, don't listen to Amber Lee, she's crazy. Go and do jobs that give you good working hours, decent pay FROM THE START, and sick/maternity leave, and don't EVER let anyone treat you like crap and expect you to "do a lot of painful things for nothing". You are worth more than that.
